Lot numbers 43 & 48 including one half acre and three and three quarter poles each, were sold by Dr. James Maney on October 24, 1870 to Rev. D. D. Moore for $650.00. Oaklands Association, Inc. purchased lot #48, known today as 801 Lee Street, containing .2 acres at auction on September 17, 2024.
The stucco covered bungalow that exists today is, at its nuclease, a very simply constructed 19th century one room log structure that was likely a crib before being reproposed into a residence. The small logs were placed on puncheon sills and later chinked with earth and wood before being whitewashed on the interior. By the 1930s two primary rooms, as well as a kitchen and bath, were added and covered in clapboard siding before stucco was later applied. Some time after that, two more rooms were added to the north and west of the dwelling.
Today, Oaklands Association, Inc. the 501 (c) 3 non-profit educational organization that owns and operates Oaklands Mansion as an historic house museum has begun research to learn if the log structure was built on its current location or moved there from elsewhere. Oral tradition indicates that some Oaklands’ dependencies, such as this one, may have been moved from the plantation grounds south when Dr. James Maney subdivided the front fields of his plantation for the construction of Maney’s Addition, Murfreesboro, Tennessee’s first subdivision circa 1868.
